Based on current assessments of water resource development constraints such as wetland water levels and saltwater intrusion, the Water Management Districts have decided that acceptable limits due to the effects of groundwater withdrawals will probably be reached in the very near future. As a result, the Water Management Districts have instituted a number of new policies to encourage water utilities to start developing alternative water supplies instead of continuing to rely wholly on groundwater. Chief amongst these new policies is the promulgation of rules which do not allow the issuance of water use permits to water utilities for increased groundwater withdrawals. As a result, a number of utilities face the certainty that future expansion of their water supplies will be increasingly challenging and expensive to implement. At LSG, we are actively working with utilities to permit future water supplies in the current regulatory environment. On behalf of our clients, we have received water permits that best meet their needs.
